If you are a cynic that believes that only selfishness motivates human actions, etc., sooner or later you turn your magnifying glass on yourself and your own motivations, limitations, and lamentations and your outlook will cause you to suffer. Not as in 'sour grapes' but more from the grinding hopelessness that happens with aa cynical point of view. "What's the point?" is the mantra of the cynic that tends to make the entire world gray and dreary.
